02.04.2022, 13:00, Kunstraum Niederoesterreich
What could be better than being close to the source? During the guided tour on 02.04.2022 through the exhibition Oh, make your fingernails into spades, Your palms into shovels you will have the opportunity to get in touch directly with the artists Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė. Moderated by curator Katharina Brandl, the Polish-Lithuanian duo will introduce you to the cosmos of artistic works on display at Kunstraum.
What does the melancholic tone of the exhibition allude to? Why do you find agri-cultural references such as hay and rakes in the Kunstraum for the first time? And what is actually the Polish “day of the dead” Dziady or the Lithuanian folk musical tradition Sutartinė? Together we will unravel the multi-layered references to Eastern European folklore, to literature and theory in the guided tour and get to know the artistic practice of the duo better.

After meeting during studies at the Royal College of Art in London, Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė have been working as a duo since 2013. Their multimedia practice – which includes performances, videos, sculptural and installation works, but perfumes, too – draws from extensive historical and theoretical research processes, a high sensitivity towards materials, and intellectual openness. They founded the YOUNG GIRL READING GROUP, a nomadic reading circle, in 2013, received the Swiss Performance Art Award in 2021 along with the Collide Residency Award, which will support their residencies at CERN (Geneva) and at Hangar in Barcelona in 2022.
