Yes, you understood correctly: Curator Katharina Brandl will give a tour of the exhibition Oh, make your fingernails into spades, Your palms into shovels by Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė on the occasion of Walpurgis Night on April 30, 2022.

We keep it with Goethe's Faust, who influenced the modern reception of Walpurgis Night as a witches' festival: " To see the Evil One they travel; There many a riddle to unravel," Faust says to Mephisto as he expressed his wish to head for the summit of Blocksberg, to which Mephisto replies, "And tie up many another, too.”

In this special tour, we will unravel and tie up riddles: the artistic practice of the Polish-Lithuanian duo Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė is alluring. They skillfully interweave literary and theoretical references: titles of art works that include quotes from the ancient poet Sappho, staged temporalities that bring Timothy Morton's notion of ecological awareness to life, and a wide variety of references to Slavic-Lithuanian folklore shape the exhibition.

On the occasion of Walpurgis Night, you will be guided through the elegiac cosmos of the artists: What is actually being mourned here and why? And what does all this have to do with witches? Is this a farewell or a new beginning?

And if you want to try out your own witchcraft practice to celebrate the day, we'll give you a small kit for a protective spell to take home.

After meeting during studies at the Royal College of Art in London, Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė have been working as a duo since 2013. Their multimedia practice – which includes performances, videos, sculptural and installation works, but perfumes, too – draws from extensive historical and theoretical research processes, a high sensitivity towards materials, and intellectual openness. They founded the YOUNG GIRL READING GROUP, a nomadic reading circle, in 2013, received the Swiss Performance Art Award in 2021 along with the Collide Residency Award, which will support their residencies at CERN (Geneva) and at Hangar in Barcelona in 2022.
